The phonogram #01083 signed by the Commissar Finucci, dated February 15th declared the sending of the deportees to Fossoli, a village near Modena, the following day the above mentioned list of deportees comprised by eighteen women and 18 men.

On February 22nd the train # 8 leaving from Fossoli was composed by 12 freight carriages, carring 650 people including the writer Primo Levi and his friend Doctor Leonardo De Benedetti and 23 of 26 interned at Borgo San Dalmazzo’s detention center.

They arrived at destination three days later, the convoy was bearing the label RSHA and stopped at the town of Auschwitz next to the concourse called “Judenrampe”.

Almost the totality of the transported train convoy #8 where taken by lorry directly to the gas chambers. The other 120 where tattooed with the prisoner ID number and sent to the camp by foot, from that voyage only 24 Italian deportees managed to survive, Primo Levi among them will later write about This experience in the book “If this is a man”.

Five of the 23 Jews arrived from Borgo San Dalmazzo on that train were immediately sent to the gas chambers and the other 18 perished before the liberation.

Our journey from Borgo San Dalmazzo to Auschwitz will follow, step by step the itinerary of the train convoy # 8 trying to stay as near as possible to the railway line.
